Places to Visit in Shimla - 15 Spots Worth Your Time (and a Few to Skip)

Shimla has a lot of listicles and not many honest ones. This guide groups the 15 places most worth your time by where they are, so you can plan realistic days rather than zig-zagging across the hills. It also covers what's overrated, what's quietly brilliant and how to fit it all into two or three days.

How to Use This List

Shimla's sights fall into three zones:

• In town: places you can walk to from Mall Road or reach with a short taxi ride.
• Just outside town: 10-20 km away, easy half-day trips.
• Worth a day trip: 40-65 km away, best as a full day or an overnight stay.

Match the zone to your time. On a two-day trip, stay in the first two zones. With four days or more, add one or two day trips, ideally with a night away from town.

In Shimla Town

1. The Ridge

The open square at the top of town, framed by Christ Church and valley views. It's the natural starting point and the place everyone gathers in the evening. Come at sunrise for a quiet version.

2. Mall Road

The pedestrian promenade of colonial facades, cafes, bookshops and woollen stores. Walk it end to end at least once, slowly.

3. Christ Church

Completed in the 1850s, this is Shimla's signature building, with stained-glass windows and a calm interior. It's lit up beautifully at night.

4. Jakhu Temple

The Hanuman temple on Shimla's highest hill, at around 2,450 metres, has a 108-foot Hanuman statue visible from across town. Walk up from the Ridge (steep, around 30-45 minutes) or take the ropeway. Watch your sunglasses and snacks, because the monkeys are bold. Taxis also go most of the way up if the walk is too much. On a clear morning, the view from the top takes in the whole of Shimla spread across its ridges, with the snow ranges beyond. Sticks are sold at the start of the path, and locals swear they keep the monkeys at a respectful distance.

5. Viceregal Lodge (Rashtrapati Niwas)

The grand Scottish-baronial former residence of the British Viceroy, now home to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Guided tours cover the interiors and the room where key decisions around Partition were discussed. It's about 4 km from the Ridge, and one of the best stops for history lovers. Completed in 1888, the building was among the first in Shimla to have electric lighting. The lawns have some of the best-kept gardens in town. Only parts of the building are open, and entry is by ticket and timed tour, so check current timings before you go and allow at least an hour.

6. Lakkar Bazaar

A market lane known for wooden crafts, walking sticks and souvenirs, just past Christ Church. It's also the start of the Jakhu path.

7. Gaiety Theatre and the Town Hall

A restored Victorian theatre that still hosts performances. Even a quick look inside is worth it.

Just Outside Town

8. Kufri

About 15 km away and higher than Shimla, Kufri is the go-to for snow in winter and big views year-round. Ride up to Mahasu Peak, visit the Himalayan Nature Park, or add Fagu for a quieter detour. Pony rides to the peak are run through union counters with posted rates, so use those rather than negotiating on the roadside. Go early, because by late morning in season the approach road can jam for half an hour or more.

9. Mashobra and Craignano

Forest walks, apple orchards and fresh air about 12 km from Shimla. Craignano's nature park and the Retreat at Chharabra are nearby. It's a calm half-day, or a lovely place to stay.

10. Naldehra

A meadow with one of the country's oldest golf courses, about 22 km from Shimla, ringed by deodar trees. It's good for picnics, horse rides and a slow afternoon.

11. Annandale and the Army Heritage Museum

A flat ground below the town, once used for races and polo, now with an army-run heritage museum. It's a good, easy outing for families. Flat land is rare in Shimla, which is why this meadow was so prized by the colonial administration for fairs, gymkhanas and cricket. The museum covers the history of the Indian Army with uniforms, weapons and memorabilia. It's well kept, rarely crowded, and a good fit for kids who've had enough of temples and shopping.

Worth a Day Trip

12. Chail

About 45 km away, Chail has a royal palace, one of the world's highest cricket grounds and a forested wildlife sanctuary. It's best as an overnight stay.

13. Narkanda and Hatu Peak

About 65 km away, and the best place near Shimla for reliable snow and huge Himalayan views. The drive up to Hatu Peak at around 3,400 metres is spectacular in clear weather. Apple orchards line the roads in late summer.

14. Tattapani

Hot sulphur springs on the Sutlej river, about 50-60 km away, with river views and, in season, rafting on calmer stretches. Great on a cold day. The original riverside springs were affected when the Kol Dam reservoir raised the water level, so today's bathing is mostly in managed pools and tanks fed by the hot water. Set expectations accordingly: it's a relaxing soak with a view, not a wild natural pool. The drive down, via Naldehra and through a steep, dramatic valley, is half the appeal.

Hidden and Offbeat Spots

15. Tara Devi Temple

A hilltop temple south of Shimla with sweeping views and a fraction of Jakhu's crowds. It's reachable by road or by a walk from Tara Devi station on the toy train line.

A few more quiet corners are worth knowing:

• Glen: a wooded ravine below the town, good for a short forest walk.
• Summer Hill: a quiet suburb with university grounds and walking trails.
• Fagu: fog-wrapped potato fields and orchards just past Kufri, often skipped by tour taxis.
• Kamna Devi and Prospect Hill: a short climb west of town to a small temple with wide views over Boileauganj and the valleys. You'll mostly share it with locals.
• The Bantony Castle area and the heritage walk: the stretch of old colonial buildings near the Mall, many recently restored. Join a guided heritage walk if one is running; the stories behind the buildings are the best part.

What's Overrated (and When It Isn't)

• Kufri in peak hours: from 11 am to 3 pm in season, it can be crowded and chaotic. Go early or stay overnight and it's a different place.
• The Ridge at 7 pm in June or late December: it's shoulder-to-shoulder. Go at sunrise or late at night for the magic.
• Packaged "Shimla sightseeing" taxi tours: they cover a lot of stops quickly, but little time at each. Picking three or four places and spending time at each works better.
• Shopping on Mall Road: prices are higher than in the Lower Bazaar or Lakkar Bazaar for similar goods.

None of these are skips. They're just best done at the right time of day.

Sample 2-Day and 3-Day Itineraries

2 days

• Day 1: arrive, check in near Mall Road, walk the Mall, the Ridge and Christ Church, and have dinner on the Mall. Take a late-evening stroll on the Ridge.
• Day 2: an early start for Jakhu (walk up, ropeway down), then a taxi to Kufri and Fagu. Be back by afternoon for Viceregal Lodge and a sunset on the Ridge.

3 days

• Day 1: town centre, as above.
• Day 2: Jakhu and Viceregal Lodge in the morning, then Mashobra and Naldehra in the afternoon.
• Day 3: Kufri and Mahasu Peak early, then continue to Chail for the night, or loop back via Tara Devi.

With four or five days, add Narkanda for a night, or Tattapani for a hot-spring day.

For families with young children, cut each day by one stop. The steep walks add up quickly, and an afternoon rest at the hotel usually saves the evening. For honeymooners, swap Viceregal Lodge for a slow morning in Mashobra and an unplanned evening on the Ridge. Shimla is at its best when you aren't racing between sights.

Getting Around

• On foot: the Mall, the Ridge, Christ Church, Lakkar Bazaar and Jakhu are all walkable, though steep in parts.
• The lift: it connects Cart Road to the Mall, and it's worth using with luggage or kids.
• Taxis: needed for Viceregal Lodge (optional), Kufri, Mashobra, Naldehra and day trips. Local taxi unions run fixed-rate sightseeing packages, so confirm the itinerary and waiting time up front.
• Self-drive: fine for day trips, but parking in the centre is hard. Leave the car at your hotel.
